elementary table height picnic tables

This project at Anova Furnishings, developed in collaboration with the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD), involved designing picnic tables tailored for younger students. The design maintained our inclusive center-access ADA feature, allowing wheelchair users to sit at the table’s center. Additionally, we adjusted the removable bench legs to be more compact, addressing feedback that the original design posed tripping hazards.

Through market research, we revealed a lack of elementary-height picnic tables, presenting a valuable opportunity. I conducted a series of product modifications, shortening the supports of our existing standard-height tables. We also explored several designs for the removable bench legs, ultimately refining the solution through prototyping. The result was six new elementary-height SKUs for LAUSD to choose from.

After the design was finalized, I assisted with two photoshoots featuring elementary-age students, where we observed firsthand how the shorter tables improved comfort and fit. Children noted the tables were more appropriately sized for their stature compared to adult tables. Additionally, feedback from a principal highlighted the tables’ benefits for students with wheelchairs, walkers, and other assistive devices.
